Secondary School Teacher Testimonial

Who are you?

“Hi, I’m Rebecca McCready and I’m a secondary school science teacher up in Northumberland.

I teach biology, chemistry and physics to students from years 7 to 11 at Duke Secondary School in Abington and I’ve been teaching for about 9 years.”

Why Megawatt?

“I’ve been really impressed by the quality and the workmanship in the MW resources… both the pack of playing cards and also the other supporting resources, the teacher resources and PowerPoints, and any student resources and handouts that they’ve made as well.

I like the MW resources because they don’t require a computer… once you’ve got them, you can use them in lots of different ways and reuse them as well.

The information about the UK and the Australian power supply frameworks, that’s quite difficult information come across or certainly to access quickly as a teacher.”

How have you used Megawatt?

“I’ve used it with Foundation Year 7 students to sort files into renewables and non-renewables.

I’ve used it for foundation lower set Year 9 students to consider how different types of energy resources are made.

We’ve also used the energy mix resources with a higher set Year 10 class to get them to consider how electricity moves from where it’s generated to where it is required.

Those students who have played the game… they’ve been really enthusiastic and become really quite competitive with each other to get the best set of power supply options for their network.”

Favourite part of Megawatt?

“I’ve seen great enthusiasm in my classes from the students who were handling resources which they would not normally use and doing some really creative things with it.

I know that the lessons have been well planned and the resources well written with excellent research and they align to the curriculum. They are correct and accurate.

I’ve really enjoyed using Megawatt and I think my students would agree with that as well. I encourage my colleagues to use the MW resources… I encourage other people to use it as well.

There’s plenty of opportunities that it can be used across the particularly the physics curriculum, but perhaps also in other areas such as when considering sustainability and biodiversity in biology.”
